Stadtzentren verändern sich: In den letzten Jahrzehnten waren sie ressourcenintensive Zentren des Konsums. Herausforderungen wie der wachsende Online-Handel und dezentrale Einkaufszentren hinterlassen jedoch ihre Spuren.
Leerstände nehmen zu und globale Marktketten prägen das Erscheinungsbild von innerstädtischen Straßenzügen. Dem gegenüber stehen nachhaltige Konsummodelle und lokale Player der Kreislaufwirtschaft, die oft nur von einer kleinen Zielgruppe wahrgenommen werden und sich noch in „Nischen“ platzieren. Oft fehlen den Verbraucher:innen das Bewusstsein und der Zugang zu diesen nachhaltigen Konsumformen.

NiCE will dies ändern und die nachhaltigen Modelle der Kreislaufwirtschaft räumlich in den Fokus rücken, innerstädtisch zugänglicher machen und das Konsumverhalten der Menschen bewusster in diese Richtung lenken, um von der Nische zum Mainstream zu gelangen.

Gemeinsam mit 8 weiteren Partnern aus dem mitteleuropäischen Raum, werden neue praktikable, übertragbare Modelle entwickelt:

• Wie kann man leerstehende Räume für zirkuläre Angebote nutzen?
• Wie lassen sich zentrale Ressourcenzentren betreiben und wirtschaftlich tragen?
• Wie lässt sich transnationaler Online-Handel mit lokalen Kreislaufdiensten verbinden?

Bildungs-, Inspirations- und Austauschformate auf transnationaler, nationaler und regionaler Ebene sollen die Ergebnisse an Städte, Regionen, Anbieter:innen alternativer Konsum- und Geschäftsmodelle, Bürger:innenvereinigungen und politische Entscheidungsträger herantragen und zur Etablierung von kreislauforientierten Stadtzentren führen.

Gemeinsam werden Ansätze erprobt die

• zur Etablierung kreislauforientierter Wirtschaftsmodelle und Lebensstile in Stadtzentren,
• zur Belebung von Leerstand in den städtischen Zentren und
• zum Herbeiführen von Verhaltensänderungen bei Bürgern, Unternehmen und lokalen Behörden führen.

Testbed in der Grazer Innenstadt

Gemeinsam mit der Abteilung für Wirtschaft- und Tourismusentwicklung und dem Umweltamt der Stadt Graz werden Grundlagen zu innerstädtischen Leerständen und Akteuren der Kreislaufwirtschaft erarbeitet. Im nächsten Schritt werden in Kooperation mit Eigentümer:innen Pilotprojekt(e) gestartet mit dem Ziel zentral gelegene Leerstände für neue Modelle der Kreislaufwirtschaft zu nutzen.

Das Projekt NiCE wird durch das Interreg Central Europe Programm unterstützt und durch die Europäische Union kofinanziert.

City centers are changing: In recent decades, they have been resource-intensive centers of consumption. However, challenges such as growing online retail and decentralized shopping centers are leaving their mark.
Vacancies and large market chains determine the appearance of inner-city streets. In contrast, sustainable consumption models and local players in the circular economy are often only perceived by a small target group and are still positioned in „niches“. Consumers often lack awareness and access to these sustainable consumption models.

NiCE wants to change this and bring the sustainable models of the circular economy into focus spatially, make them more accessible within the city and steer people’s consumption behavior more consciously in this direction in order to move from the niche to the mainstream.

Together with 8 other partners from the Central European region, new viable, transferable models are being developed:

° How can vacant spaces be used for circular offerings?
° How can central resource centers be operated and economically supported?
° How can transnational online trade be linked with local circular services?

Educational, inspirational and exchange formats on a transnational, national and regional level will bring the results to cities, regions, providers of alternative consumption and business models, citizens‘ associations and political decision-makers and lead to the establishment of circular city centers.

° … that contribute to the establishment of circular economic models and lifestyles in city centers.
° … to revitalize vacancies in urban centers .
° … that lead to bringing about behavioral change among citizens, businesses and local authorities.

Testbed in the city center of Graz

Together with the Graz Department for Economic and Tourism Development and the Graz Environmental Agency, basic information on inner-city vacancies and actors in the circular economy will be developed. In the next step, pilot project(s) will be started in cooperation with owners with the aim to use centrally located vacant spaces for new models of circular economy.
